Business succession planning is about the VALUE of the business to the seller and the buyer.  Ideally the process starts a few years in advance of a target date.  Discovery involves identifying your objectives, values, and assets and developing a plan to maximize them. This may include identifying potential successors, valuing the business, developing a buy-sell agreement, and creating a plan for the transfer of ownership and management. The plan may also include strategies for minimizing tax liabilities and preserving the wealth of the owner and their family.
